Howard SternHoward Stern - The King of All Media
Forbes 2018 Highest Paid Radio Show Host
Stern was born on January 12, 1954, in New York, New York. He brought his signature “shock jock” radio style to New York listeners in 1982. Stern has been described as the “King of All Media” since 1992 for his successes outside radio. He hosted and produced numerous late night television shows, pay-per-view events, and home videos. His two books, Private Parts (1993) and Miss America (1995), entered The New York Times Best Seller list at number one and sold over one million copies. The former was made into a biographical comedy film in 1997 that had Stern and his radio show staff star as themselves. It topped the US box office in its opening week and grossed $41.2 million domestically. Stern performs on its soundtrack, which charted the Billboard 200 at number one and was certified platinum for one million copies sold.
Howard Stern landed his first radio jobs while at Boston University. From 1976 to 1982, Stern developed his on-air personality through morning positions at WRNW in Briarcliff Manor, New York, WCCC in Hartford, Connecticut, WWWW in Detroit, Michigan, and WWDC in Washington, D.C. Stern worked afternoons at WNBC in New York City from 1982 until his firing in 1985. In 1985, he began a 20-year run at WXRK in New York City; his morning show entered syndication in 1986 and aired in 60 markets and attracted 20 million listeners at its peak. Stern won numerous industry awards, including Billboard’s Nationally Syndicated Air Personality of the Year eight consecutive times, and is the first to have the number one morning show in New York City and Los Angeles simultaneously. He became the most fined radio host when the Federal Communications Commission issued fines totaling $2.5 million to station owners for content it deemed indecent. Stern became one of the highest paid radio figures after signing a five-year deal with Sirius in 2004 worth $500 million making the Shock Jock the One and Only King of All Media. In recent years, Stern’s photography has been featured in Hamptons and WHIRL magazines. From 2012 to 2015, he served as a judge on America’s Got Talent.
Freed from the constraints of the FCC rules, Stern’s show has taken his shock jock formula into new territory. It’s also made him wildly wealthy. In addition to his contract, Stern also helped catapult satellite radio’s popularity. In 2005, Sirius Radio boasted 2.2 million new subscribers, a 190 percent increase from 2004. The better than expected numbers netted Stern roughly $200 million in Sirius stock.
Stern, who’s said that the last 10 years under the FCC made him “hate” going to work, has sounded and felt refreshed since making the move to satellite. He signed on for another five years in 2010. But it hasn’t all be smooth sailing for the shock jock and the satellite radio giant. He engaged in a legal battle with Sirius, which merged with satellite rival XM in 2008, over stock rewards in 2010. He claimed that the company owed his production company and his agent $330 million. A judge threw out the suit in 2012, and Stern plans to appeal the ruling.
Even if he leaves satellite radio, Stern appears to have a future in television. He has signed on to be a judge of the popular competition America’s Got Talent. Some of the show’s tapings have moved to New York to accommodate Stern. “Everyone thinks he’s going to come in really outrageous,” said former fellow judge Sharon Osbourne. “He comes to us with great experience, especially about music.”
Beth Ostrosky Stern
Stern is married to model Beth Ostrosky. The couple wed in October 2008 in a ceremony at a restaurant in Manhattan. The guest list included longtime friends Barbara Walters, Billy Joel, John Stamos, Joan Rivers, Donald Trump and Sarah Silverman.
Beth recently addressed rumors that she and her husband of a decade are getting divorced. A sigh of relief was breathed on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” when Beth Stern confirmed she and Howard Stern were still in “marital bliss.” Beth assured Ellen she and Howard were still enjoying “20 years of marital bliss.” (They married in 2008 but have been together for much longer.) “I’m setting the record straight right here,” she said. “I love my Howard! He’s a great guy.”
North Shore Animal League America
More than 250 dogs, cats, puppies and kittens of all ages and breeds from North Shore Animal League America, the world’s largest no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization, found loving homes in time for the holidays this past weekend. Beth & Howard Stern, and a small group of friends, set up a fund to pay the adoption fees for all approved adopters from this past Friday through Sunday. Their hope was to encourage more people to adopt over the holidays and clear the cages at the shelter – and it certainly worked.
As the leader in the no-kill movement, North Shore Animal League America is committed to saving and rehabilitating the lives of homeless animals and educating the public about the joys and responsibilities of rescue.
Founded in 1944, we’re the world’s largest, most comprehensive no-kill rescue and adoption organization. We are headquartered in Port Washington, N.Y. with 2,000 shelter partners across the country and around the globe.
America’s Got Talent
Howard Stern gave an emotional farewell to America’s Got Talent, after appearing on the NBC reality competition for four seasons.
In a video that sees him chatting with various people of New York City, the radio icon noted his initial motivation to join the series.
“I thought it would be really cool to be a judge, because I think I have something to offer,” he says. “If I had any dream about this, it’s that I could take someone who was struggling and seriously give advice. I was told over and over again that I had no talent. I was in college radio. No one was banking on me. I sent a copy of my show to my father, my father wrote me back a five-page letter and was brutally honest. … It wasn’t harsh, I think it was out of love.”
He admits that in becoming a judge on the competition, “I did the most shocking thing of my career — I was on a family show,” but has loved meeting kids and parents who recognize him while out on the town. “I’ll go to a restaurant and parents will bring over their 10-year-olds to sit on my lap to take a picture. I’m like, ‘Oh my god.’ It’s kind of funny to me because this never happened to me in my career.”
“I’ve had such incredible moments on this show, I really have,” he added in the video, which aired during the 10th season’s finale on Wednesday. “I still get chills when I walk out on the stage. It has been phenomenal.”
