 Message from the President

Bosch is making significant strides building on our global leadership in mobility while leveraging our core competencies in sensors, software and services to become a major player in the Internet of Things (IoT). The success of this strategy in North America is evident in this report.

We completed the 2017 fiscal year with $13.7 billion in consolidated sales in North America. After adjusting for exchange-rate effects, the group’s sales revenue in North America remained on the previous year’s level. Sales in the region represent 16 percent of the Bosch Group’s 2017 sales of $88.2 billion. The number of associates employed throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico in 2017 reached nearly 34,500 – a 5 percent increase over 2016 and a 40 percent increase since 2013.

Sales in Bosch’s four business sectors were in line with sales from the previous year. Sales totaled $9 billion in our Mobility Solutions sector, which focuses on automated, connected and electrified vehicle solutions. Sales in the Consumer Goods sector, which includes our Home Appliances and Power Tools divisions, were up slightly over 2016 to $2.5 billion. Our Industrial Technology sector reported a slight increase over 2016 sales. Finally, our Energy and Building Technology sector sales were even compared to 2016.

We enjoy continued success offering customers comprehensive solutions from Bosch’s broad portfolio. Bosch video cameras and engineering know-how will be building blocks of infrastructure for the Smart Mobility Corridor near Columbus, Ohio. Several new Miami high-rise projects will feature Bosch appliances and HVAC heat pumps. In addition, we are expanding our existing mining products into the new areas of high-pressure grinding and sea dredging, while also offering Industry 4.0 mining solutions. All of these projects capitalize on the broad and deep experience, technology and quality for which Bosch is well known.

Bosch continued to make significant investments in facilities across the North America region, investing $466 million in 2017. BSH Home Appliances broke ground on a new dishwasher plant expansion in New Bern, North Carolina; we expanded operations in mobility manufacturing facilities in Anderson County, South Carolina; our Research & Technology Center moved into a beautiful new facility in Silicon Valley; and our Thermotechnology division opened its new North American headquarters in Watertown, Massachusetts. In addition, Bosch subsidiary ETAS completed its acquisition of TrustPoint Innovation Technologies, Ltd., based in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, to further strengthen its global expertise in embedded security solutions.

The pages that follow illustrate the transformation underway at Bosch as we extend our leading role as a partner for mobility solutions, build on our reputation as a leading Internet of Things provider, and drive cultural change in our company – all to deliver products and services that are “Invented for life.”
